How Much Matcha Should You Use?
One of the most common questions I receive from international customers is:
“How many grams of matcha should I use?”
There are some traditional guidelines in the world of matcha.
However, just like cooking, I believe the best answer is ultimately the one that suits your own taste.
Let’s start with the basic measurements.
Usucha (Thin Tea)
Usucha is the most common and widely enjoyed style of matcha.
- Matcha: approximately 2g
- Water: 60–70ml at 70–80°C (158–176°F)
It is also an excellent starting point for those new to matcha.
Koicha (Thick Tea)
Koicha is the more formal style traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies.
- Matcha: approximately 4g
- Water: approximately 30ml at 70–80°C (158–176°F)
Because the flavor is highly concentrated, high-quality matcha is essential. Otherwise, bitterness can become overwhelming.
For this reason, Koicha is usually reserved for tea gatherings and special occasions.
Matcha Latte
Matcha lattes have become increasingly popular around the world.
- Matcha: 2–3g
- Water: approximately 30ml
- Milk:150–200ml
There Are Guidelines, But No Single Correct Answer
The measurements above are useful starting points.
However, there is no rule that says you must prepare matcha exactly this way.
Different matcha varieties have different personalities.
Some are naturally sweet and mellow.
Others have a stronger, more robust character.
Personal preference also plays an important role.
That is why I recommend starting with the traditional ratios and then adjusting them until you find your ideal cup.
How I Personally Prepare Matcha
For everyday drinking, I often prepare matcha using:
- Matcha: approximately 3g
- Water: approximately 80ml
This is slightly stronger than a traditional Usucha, but I enjoy how it brings out the sweetness and umami of the tea.
On days when I simply want to enjoy more matcha, I might use:
- Matcha: approximately 4g
- Water: 100ml or more
This allows me to consume more matcha while keeping the drink easy to enjoy.
During the hot summer months, I sometimes prepare a simple iced matcha.
My preferred recipe is:
- Matcha: approximately 4g
- Water: approximately 80ml
I place three ice cubes in a matcha bowl and pour the whisked matcha directly over the ice.
This creates a refreshing “matcha on the rocks” that is perfect for warm weather.
Even if you increase the amount of matcha, adding more water can keep the drink balanced and enjoyable.
Tea Ceremony and Everyday Matcha Are Different Experiences
Japanese tea ceremony has a long history and many traditions that have been carefully preserved for generations.
At the same time, I believe everyday matcha should be much more flexible.
You can make it stronger.
You can make it lighter.
You can experiment until you find what suits you best.
Once you discover a matcha you enjoy, I encourage you to explore different ratios and create your own perfect bowl.
Summary
Here are the traditional starting points:
Start with these guidelines and adjust them little by little.
The best recipe is the one that tastes best to you.
I hope this helps you find your own perfect way to enjoy matcha.
